I cringe when I see my Adobe bill. It's not my cup of tea. However when I need something, it's there and I can usually figure it out. Subscriptions suck the money that's for sure.

John, it appears there are a number of free web services to do image inversions, for example: https://invert.imageonline.co/ Maybe this would be of use to your students?
Free Irfanview does inversions too. Renaming files, changing resolution, cropping, converting from one photo type to another such as tiff to jpeg or pdf etc, and simple edtis are very easy. It also allows you to open Windows Paint to annotate pictures. I also use it for editing screen captures. Just paste the capture into the Irfan photo file and off you go. You can also use it for watching video files.
I use Irfanview all the time to prep photos for posting on the web especially.
Download the plugins as well.

And yet Adobe bought Figma (UI/UX prototyping tool) which kind of shows where they want to put their trust for the long term. I see Canva as a product aimed at the social media producing individuals vs Figma is aimed at Business users. I have a love/hate relationship with Adobe. Love their products, hate their pricing model. When they bought ColdFusion from Macromedia they almost killed it, but the latest versions are much more powerful and friendly than most other App building tools for database driven sites. Card and brochure design sites tend to come and go. Its the creative minds behind the designs that add value or run into limitations of the tools.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
