"I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority"---EB White
Yeah, but now a number of people having been charging into the backcountry over high east side passes on a last minute basis, coinciding with serious avalanche risk - heavy snowfall following freezing rain on the rocks. But that link shows only the foothills on the west side now officially open, well below what most people think of when Sequoia NP is mentioned. I look at the bright side; hopefully a number of pot plantations and meth labs were wiped out down in the brush, when it burned. That kind of thing has been a real epidemic lower down. The actual loss to Sequoia groves at mid-elevation is still to be determined; but they expect it to be catastrophic in at least two groves, but not along the highway per se and the most famous trees, which had the advantage of deliberate control burns a few years earlier.
