...the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect.
Three examples I pulled from images shown before
For two of them, the question being, is a shadow a 'thing' that can be juxtaposed?
And for the third image, is a human form a 'thing' to contrast with a stone abstract form(s)?
The Yosemite image is questionable. But the form of the absence of light contrasted with the organic form representing the absence of life is a more interesting possibility -- a contrast of absences, rather than opposites.
