I should add, that as an inadequate alternative, I've taken to scanning SOME of my 4x5 images using a Sony a850 with a Fujinon-EX 90mm f4.5 on a Beseler Dual-Mode Slide Duplicator.

I've considered going that route too, but it's about as costly (used) as a new V850. And to scan my 8x10 negs with a digital camera would require stitching. Better to go for a new scanner, I think. It might make some sense though if I also did digital photography.
If you are not scanning color negatives -- which require conversion -- a digital camera and a simple 8x10 light box would be a lot cheaper. Of course, you need a tripod, copy stand, etc. for the camera, but you probably have that. No stitching needed -- assuming you have a copy lens in the area of 75-125mm.
