Another sad San Francisco story of art and culture versus real estate. This was a wonderful place to visit, for free. I hope there will be a favorable resolution to its future.

Say it isn’t so .... so sad if it goes.
The museum does not pay for what it is using and somehow is surprised to get a notice of 30 days to pay up or face legal action for eviction?
Solution is simple, pay the rent or leave.
Sorry to see it happening but they brought it on themselves.

$18,000 increase rent per month or $216,000 a year is 0.568% of their $38 Million asset reported in 2018.
2 year noticed given, 30 days to comply.

"The building is rented from the Port of San Francisco, which until 2017 granted the museum rent credits in exchange for repairs and improvements; these expired with the end of the lease term in 2017, and since the museum refused to pay the increased rent, in December 2019 the port served the foundation with notice that it must vacate the building and may be sued for underpayment of rent during the two years since the lease expired."
Option 1: Have dialogue with Port commission and Mayor to extend rent credit or agree on a sustainable rent.
Option 2: Continue to provide free space but on occasion produce exhibitions, publications, and public programs - charge accordingly.
Option 3: They can source $30,000 per month on rent since the agreement, there has to be a way to increase that.
Two years is a sufficient time to work these out. An "investment" banker should have an aptitude for such matters. Otherwise, he didn't care about this endeavor or just lazy. As much as I enjoy the visual arts, free is not sustainable.

I don't believe for a second Andy is going to liquidate part of his collection. I doubt that this is all stored in Pier 24. Only few hundred pieces on display at one time.
Pier 24 sat empty and not maintained at all for a very long time when Andy spent $11M to clean it up and make this space usable and attractive for its current function. Unless someone is ready and willing to move in, eviction is not in the best interest of the city, nor the building itself.
Pretty sure a compromise can be reached, Option 1 (ghostcount) is the sensible thing to do.
I've been to Pier 24 many times since inception and it would be a shame to see this effort go to waste.
YMMV,
