8x10 Film Holder - Stuffing Coming Out - Can I Fix?

I have some old film holders. The Kodak and Agfa are fine, but two B&J have the stuffing coming out. The seal that the dark-slide fits into in the collar(?) at the top. I think it is stuffed with bat wings and puppy fur. This makes a dramatic sky -- if unintentionally. The … we’ll go with collar … is riveted together. I don’t think I want to drill the rivets out as I’m not that handy. Any thoughts? Worth fixing, or does it become a lamp or picture frame?

If this has already been asked, I apologize. I've sort of taken a hiatus from the 8x10 (which I never became proficient at) until my family got to a point when I have a bit more time. I've not kept up with the forum, but it is still as great as it was!

    Maybe picture frames?

Or keep for parts. I have a cannibal box where the hopeless accumulate and I've rebuilt many old film holders from the parts--- flaps, locking ells, & dark slides.

Better yet, for grins and giggles drill out those rivets and see if you can replace the velvets.

If the operation doesn't go well, then into the cannibal box!

The finger springs under the velvets are desirable and hard to source.

Some are made of standard lengths linked together, as 1 is used for 4X5, 2 for 5x7, 3 for 8x10 and separable, others are custom sized.

Thanks John and Randy! It is really just simple velvet in there? I guess that would be worth the danger or drilling the rivets out. And I will be prepared for springs jumping then.

    Thank you,

The springs won't jump, but they are delicate.

Finding a good velvet may be a trick.

    Take pictures and post.

Jon Goodman makes and sells camera light seal kits. I purchased several kits for my Mamiya RB film backs, which have the same comb-like springs for the dark slide. He may be able to send you what you need - very reasonable and a great guy to do business with. Here is the e-mail address I have, but it is a couple of years old:

    Good luck!
