Recomendations of books on Optics

I am interested in learning more about my lenses and usage. I am also interested in the use of telecentric lenses to acheive isometric effects and entocentric effects that can actually show more distant objects larger than near objects. This and the fundamental mathematics of optics are ---well I feel the need to scratch the itch and understand a bit more about the stuff I am shelling out all the money for.

Does anyone have some recomendations on basic and intermediate texts on optics and perhaps how to relate it to practical LF photography?

Applied Photographic Optics, Third Edition

I never read it, but heard it is quite comprehensive, and quite expensive :-) But considering it may save ya from a bad purchase?

I am curious about this lens that makes farther objects appear larger? Are they ever made for photographic purposes?

Recomendations of books on Optics

Several books by Rudolf Kingslake, "Optics in Photogaraphy" "The Photographic Lens"
And if you REALLY want the math, Conrady, "Applied Optics and Optical Design"

Recomendations of books on Optics

A google search brought up several websites. One is www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/3d/telecent.htm. That in turn has a link to www.edmundoptics.com/techsupport/DisplayArticle.cfm?articleid=261

I think this may be a very specialized topic which you won't find in conventional books on optics. I'm pretty sure it isn't in Kingslake, but it may be in a more comprehensive book. To tell the truth, at first I thought that what you described is impossible. But apparently such lenses work by focusing on one specific plane of focus and go out of focus outside that plane but remain sharp enough by stopping down. Still, they clearly violate the lens equation relating subject distance, image distance, and magnification.

Applied Optics and Optical Deisgn by Conrady.

Part One is the theory, Part Two gives examples of specific lens designs.

Recomendations of books on Optics

Applied Photographic Optics, by Sidney Ray, is an excellent
overall treatment of the subject. The coverage of telecentric optics is
very cursory, however.
