hello,
I have been given a lot of Polaroid linear polarizer (grade HN38), in thin 4x4" sheets. I believe they are optically OK, but has anyone tried this in front of the lens? What about compensation?

Try it. Most likely they are for lighting or other purposes then in front of the lens.
Here's a link.

Considering that polarizers are somewhat precise in their manufacture compared to other plastic-based filters I would be surprised if a thin-stock polarizer (on the order of 6-10 mil) was not flat enough optically to be of no significant impact. Especially on large format.
