I used some rock polishing compound - because I had some. Seemed to work OK, but I have no experience with other materials.

I know you said you made the gg frame to fit flush. This isn't a perfect solution, but it works.
You can just use machine screws into the wooden shackles.

Yes, hacksaw blades are the standard. I would have used those (ground to shape and stripped of paint) but I already had the Deardorff springs I bought a few years ago on a whim.
Michael, that looks like an elegant solution, but I think I have it figured out. I'll know by this time tomorrow, as I will cut them out tomorrow after work.

FWIW, I made my own out of brass strips bent into a shallow omega-shape with a piece of brass rod silver soldered into them. It took a good bit of trial and error to get them right, but they turned out fairly nicely.
