If you're planning a trip to the islands, best guess is to reserve a permit on-line when you're booking your trip...no walk-ups allowed. Link: https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/253731
    Nice.

Soon, as the population grows, we won't even be able to go on our land. I saw a train bridge driving down the road. There was a small, remote park there. I stopped to look for a picture. But they wanted $10 bucks to visit that place or have a special pass. I left and not a few miles down the road there was another train bridge and a gravel park area with no facilities. They wanted yet a different special pass to go there. And none of these places are even special. This point of use tax is a PITA. All at the convenience of the public servants instead of the other way around. Unbelievable.

It seems to be getting that way. Certain areas of Monument Valley require not only a permit, but you must also use a Navajo guide to go along with you. From what I can gather, these areas are still used for ceremonial purposes, and they don't want the ugly tourists (yes, some spoil it for all of us) desecrating their land. I can understand that after getting a look at some folks. Havasu Canyon is getting that way too, but no requirement for a guide just yet...just gotta pay the Havasupai to play, but it is a beautiful place. Ditto for Antelope Canyon (Navajo guide), but I hear they stopped photographic tours in Upper Antelope.

From the same spot as 'Chimney Corner' (perhaps I should have stitched a panorama).
