Emulsion up or emulsion down - v700 and BetterScanning adapter

This has been discussed before I'm certain. A precise and definitive answer may not be as forthcoming !

I have a BatterScanning adapter for the v700. The product website gives instructions for dry mounting but omits a very important detail as I understand it.

1. I place an appropriate light mask on the table.
2. I place the piece of ANR glass that has only one surface with an ANR coating on top of the light mask such that the ANR surface is uppermost. The glossy side is lying on the light mask underneath.
3. I tape the film to the ANR side of the glass insert.

BUT !

Do I place the emulsion side of the film against the ANR side of the glass insert or not ??

I ask before I go on a long excursion of mucking about unnecessarily.

My intuition says that the emulsion side of the film should not be placed against the ANR surface.

I dry-mount (tape) the film's emulsion side "down" onto the etched side of the mounting glass. (That is, the emulsion side is directly against the etched glass.) My personal testing shows it works better for me this way.

However, I think the forum is evenly divided on whether emulsion side should be down (like me) or up.

I don't think the Betterscanning site states its preference, but in one of its photos, someone wearing white gloves is taping emulsion side up.

Do it both ways and see what works best for you!

I can happily mention that Doug at BetterScanning replied to my email and said that he doesn't get involved in the debate but some say up and some say down. I take it that to do a test I should select say three small patches on a neg and scan these then zoom in to see whether I have it right ?

An advantage for me today was to tape them onto the glass emulsion side away from the ANR glass surface because the curl in the film worked in my favour for achieving flatness.

I also don't see where to change any focus settings in Vuescan. Perhaps there aren't any.

I feel more empowered now. There is so much to remember !

use it to way that you tuned height for. I never seen any difference which way to put it. And now with double sided X-ray - don't have to care anymore too

I scan either way! I read some where that you should mount it in such a way that the film is pushed flattest by the glass.

I try your standardize with the emulsion facing the sensor.

I find that scanning through the base gives me fuzzy edges
