Try some black paint on the chip; the result might be better than you expect (I have an even bigger chip in the same place on my 19" Dagor, and the results seem fine to me).

Results look pretty good as it is right now. I cannot see any soft spots or other issues in any images with this lens as it is... but i will try the paint just for kicks as well!

I would like to be able to repair LF shutters as well as shutters in other mechanical cameras, but terminology like "pallet" and "escapement" stops me. Are there general resources on shutters and timing mechanisms in cameras that would help me? Thanks.

just google "clockwork escapement" there's quite a bit there.
