I keep my trays looking clean (and the SS trays I have used for 35 years for silver gelatin printing are still spotless, a small dent or two perhaps)...pretty boring for his purposes.

I have to hand it to this guy. He's gotten a lot of mileage out of this project.
I saw these images at Paris Photo LA last year. I found them quite interesting.

Thanks for sharing that. I don't feel so bad about my horrid looking trays anymore. I just wish my prints didn't look horrid, too.
Mine were purchased used and came pre-spotted, for convenience. What is the obsession with clean trays? I read Arbus would have her's disinfected. Mine get a cold water rinse.
Some of my carbon stained trays are quite beautiful. I can't bring myself around to cleaning them...
