Possibly the best sheet film holder ever made

I just got this amazing holder in a bundle with some other gear.
    Attachment 111983
Its a linhof 9X12 holder which has:
    Attachment 111984
    A pressure plate (!)
    Attachment 111985
An automatic flip up darkslide light trap (which pops up when you pull back on the slide)
    Attachment 111986
A film ejector lever (one for each side)

This is incredible, and i wish i had one for 4X5....

Linhof quickly learned that the market would not bear the high cost of precision given the cheap yet efficient alternatives and as a result these were made for only a short time many years ago.

Sinar made a far more expensive one with a pressure plate for 4x5 film. Another bellyflop. Even pressure plates won't hold the film truly flat. There are much simpler
    ways to do that.

The field of focus is not flat. It's curved.

So why would you want the film to be flat???

If you believe you can, or you believe you can't... you're right.

Mamiya made a copy for RB. Very nice indeed.

What would those simpler ways be?

Either vac or adhesive holders can be made with simple modifications of ordinary plastic holder, though I used a more expensive aluminum holder for my own 8x10
vac one (only used in dkrm - in the field I use 8x10 adhesive holders. ... 4x5 usually stays reasonably flat on its own, except when pressure plates actually deflect it!,
which was the case with both Readyload and Quickload holders).

Leigh, unflat film gives you something warped and out of focus somewhere, esp in the middle when the film is most likely to bow. Also, any lines you actually need
to be straight, as in architecture, won't be.

Actually, these were made for use with film and glass plates, hence the pressure plate. This accommodation for plates also made the holders thicker. The later Linhof "Super Sheet Film Holders" that are clearly film-only were made just like a Fidelity, with no moving pressure plates.

What do you need to modify to make a holder adhesive ready?
