A 4x5 negative does not fit Durst Trinomask 450 - why?

    Hello,

When I try to accommodate a 4x5 negative (Ilford Delta 100, or any other) into my Durst Trinomask 450, it does not fit on the longer side. The length of negative is about 125mm, but distance between the two pins on both sides of the opening is 124mm. I am sure it is done on purpose, but what the purpose is? Am I supposed to cut (or rather punch) a small notch to make negative fit?
    Enlighten me, please..

    thanks,
    Dimitri.

Any chance the mask was for 9x12cm, and it is 4mm larger than the 12cm negative (but too narrow for the 127 mm = 5 inch negative)?

It's annoying that a 4*5 Durst enlarger like the Laborator 1200 cannot handle the full area of a 4*5 negative (in my case I have Femoneg holder). I believe there is was a slightly larger holder (Femoneg AM?) Larger in the sense that the opening/glass is larger, but the condensor area of a Lobarator is not very large anyway.

    I guess that a Laborator 1200 is more a 9*12 cm that a 4*5 inch enlarger.

Regarding your problem with the pin: is this pin not part of the pin registration system? And if so, is there not a screw at the back or something whit which you can adjust this pin ? At least that is the case with the Femoneg.

    good luck,

    Cor

Funny that - I have the smaller brother, the L1000 and there are no issues with 4x5 on it?

Can you print a whole 4*5 negative (including the corners and the unexposed edges) on a L1000 ?

    Best,

It depends on the mask. If I use the tauneg then I can see right out to the edges (although thats form memory). Using the metal masks the very edges are covered, but ts only a tiny crop.

I'd say its the mask rather than the enlarger?

You have the 9x12 mask. The negative carrier labeled 'AM' is full 4x5.

Of course, not. The short side of the negative fits perfectly, even with a little clearance. The problem is the LONG side.

    Core,
the negative holder that I use is Trineg, it is part of Durst 138 SP. There are quite a number of different glassless masks for TRINEG exist (I have 4), from 135 to 13x18cm format. They all called Durst Trinomask and differ just by its ending.
http://www.glennview.com/durst.htm has extensive description about various negative carriers. There is, e.g. Durst LAPFE 450, it looks exactly like my Durst Trinomask 450. The upper half of the mask has 6 U-shaped openings for each of the pin from the lower half. The pins sit on the plate absolutely firmly. Like I said in my another post, the shorter side of negative (4") fits between 2 pairs of pins without problems, while the longer side (5") is about 1 mm too long.
