    Re: July 2013 Portraits

Here are a few more from last weekend. I was fortunate enough to shoot tintypes of local MN based musician Grant Hart... Formerly the drummer of Husker Du in the 80's. i shot some more tins of him earlier in the year for his new album release coming out in July, called "The Argument." Anyway, these are the ones we did last Saturday... All were 8x10 2 shot in my studio, and 2 outside.

    Re: July 2013 Portraits

Been reading Maine Moderns: Art in Seguinland, 1900-1940 (Portland Museum of Art) in furthering my interest in pictorialism. Like Day and Clarence White, I have a special affinity for the Maine woods. I notice their images of youth in the daytime light dappled woods is an immense technical challenge I'm still figuring out. Looks like I should stick to simpler clothes for a contemporary compromise; putting up buck naked children on the Internet wouldn't be that wise these days, so I'm not looking to emulate dead photographers that closely, and highly patterned clothing like this is too distracting. The old pictorialists got really soft images that looked pretty nice; I shot these at f6.6 when I usually use f8 with the 190mm reinhold wollaston meniscus; a 1/3 stop makes a big difference in softness on that lens. Uncorking the aperture to increase softness is either precisely calculated bravado or a wasted sheet of film with little room for error. 4x5 fp4+ in pyrocat hd.

It's called "tap-dancing on the edge of a cliff". I'd say you're doing it quite well.

Very nice! You know, since an heir of the Pinkham & Smith firm allowed someone to make the more modern Pinkham & Smith Bi-Quality, you could track down another heir and commission a Pinkham & Smith Tri-Quality!

A wonderful series you've been working on with that sitter and the little Cooke Portrait Lens, Robert. But for some reason I have a hard time believing they weren't shot in the late fifties/early sixties...
