    Sourcing new canvas backgrounds

I am doing a large format portraiture project after being out of the commercial scene for several years. I'm looking for a good quality, classic "Irving Penn" painted canvas backdrop (not muslin) for individual or two person "studio on location" portraits in black and white. Think of the old Dewar's scotch ads. Are there any good deals out there or do I have to spring $1500 for an Oliphant?

No, I don't want to paint one myself!

I understand that you are not crazy about muslin. But Denny has such a huge variety of backgrounds, there just might be something there which would satisfy your needs. It really is an enormous glossy catalogue.

You might also want to try http://www.backdropoutlet.com. They have plenty of backdrops and are very reasonably priced. The other option is of course eBay.
