Hi Alex - the best solution I can think of is to have lots of holders and an assistant to preload them for you. It was typical in the day to carry 18 or so holders in a case.
I might have Devin...
My pleasure, Alex. You've done a remarkable job of re-inventing the Curtis.
Best wishes,
Scott

Yes, the backing is applied over the emulsion and the ambrotype is viewed through the glass. I think there's no need to be concerned about viewing through the glass - that was the method. And of...
Just a suggestion. To make an ambrotype try exposing and developing another plate so that you get a thin negative. Ambrotypes are actually thin negatives with a black backing.

I use a product called Wood Swell and Lock, bought many years ago, probably no longer on the market. Does the trick. This appears to be what's currently available, Mohawk Swel-Lock:...

Hi Ron,
Yes, the the front cell has a cemented achromat and the rear has the usual two air-spaced elements. There was 100 years of dirt on the lenses so I cleaned them up. But I would have...

I have this Petzval lens that I find odd, but then maybe it's not. I'd appreciate feedback.
All measurements are approximate. The focal length appears to be 195mm,...
I love seeing a basket case brought back to life. Well done. I can recommend an alternative to painting or powder coating metal parts and it holds up to handling better than paint. Apply Birchwood...
I ran across this diffusion concept in the 1891 issue of Photographic Mosaics. It appears to be similar in approach but not identical to the Imagon design that appeared some 30 years later. Perhaps...

Yes, I have one for 4x5 format. I've known of 3 others. The focal length is 133mm and back focal distance is 215mm That would allow infinity focus on a 4x5 Graflex body. They are as common as...
I spent a few enjoyable hours of my day reading through only a portion of this material.
Thanks!
Are you thinking of the Posographe? It's wondeful.

OK, I found it and the Home Portrait suggestion helped me get there. It's its kissing cousin, the Korona Pictorial View.
Here's some info: http://www.piercevaubel.com/cam/gundlach/pict.htm

I appreciate the quick reply! It looks Korona-ish to me, and very similar to the Home Portrait, but all of the photos I've seen of the Home Portrait show that the rack that engages the pinion is...
I would like to ID this camera. It's an 8x10 tailboard. The bellows extends comfortably to at least 21 inches. I didn't want to stress it further. The back track would allow much greater...
I've always been curious if anyone has removed the cells and repainted them?
OK, got it. 5 bucks/year I can afford.
I'm not sure I understand the suggestion for mounting the fresnel. If the fresnel is mounted on the outside (loupe, not lens side) of the ground glass, and the ridges are facing the photographer, is...

Scanning some of my old 35mm Kodacolor negatives I came across this one. As I recall, it was taken somewhere near Clear Lake, CA. in the dog days of...
It looks like the front cell, or element, is held in place by that thin black ring. I don't see spanner slots or holes in the ring. My suggestion is to grip the ring with a rubber tool and turn it...
Color separations for tri-color photography are made on B&W film but an interesting image can be made by shooting on color film if there is a time delay between exposures. By using color film for...
Yes, my impression is that the most common form was the single sided metal plate holder.
Are you also interested in 13x18cm cameras? If so many Ernemann, Contessa Nettel, Zeiss, ICA folding and klapp style cameras had this style of hood. I think it was a common feature on many European...
Absolutely. That's really the greatest challenge and I agree that software comes to the rescue. I've thought about constructing alternative shooting solutions for 4x5. I'd like to shoot exposures...
This is from a 6x7cm roll film back on a Crown Graphic. The great thing about Seagulls is they aren't nervous. It wasn't about to move from its perch regardless of all the commotion I made with my...
I didn't take this photograph. I'm not quite that old, or talented. I assembled the 5x7 separation negatives in Photoshop. It was possibly taken at the NY Daily News color studio, run by Harry...
Water is a great subject. Very nice.
I have a Devin but the pellicles are damaged, so it's not useable. On the other hand, I have used my 4x5 Curtis tri-color camera with success.

Vance,
That's your first attempt? Congratulations, it's a wonderful image.

Just to be clear, I used denatured alcohol. I thought it would be slow acting so that's when I thought to try the ultrasonic cleaner. I really didn't want to use acetone zylene unless I found it...
