Pinkham & Smith Visual Quality IV at f/6.3 on a 5x7 Speed Graphic.
I also own and use a KMV. When I was learning photography in the 60s, it was the workhorse camera for the professional who employed me (in the darkroom). When time and inclination allowed, he taught...

A much needed and well executed comparison of some of the great softies. Kudos.
This is the best news I've heard in a while...
So glad that you're back and active once more.
I've learned so much from your articles over the years, esp those in VIEW CAMERA.
Keep up the good...
FWIW, mine is #126.
Yes, this is a pre-war set. I'm not totally convinced that the optical formula is the same in the later Imagons with three three (or two) perforated diaphragms. The behavious seems rather different...
Which size of strainer? There should be three...
Inquiring minds, and all that.

Thanks for posting the link to my dissertation. I apologize that...
I'm late for the party again, sorry.
Here's my little Linhof Standard, or at least that's what I think it is. Note that the focusing scale is in feet.
Informed replies are appreciated....
Apologies for being so late to the party. Here's my 5x7 from my Flickr account: www.flickr.com/photos/strathedenfarm/34787741602/in/album-72157673077095274/
It has thee accessories: 4x5 back, a 6x9...
I shoot both the 12 and 16 inch Kodak Portrait lenses. As JP points out above, focus the way Kodak states in the instructions! You'll be much happier with the effect.
The 12" provides lovely...
Availlable on the internet. This is a scan of my copy that I sent them maybe 10 years ago. https://www.cameraeccentric.com/static/img/pdfs/imagon_1.pdf
Jim, thanks for that information. i had wondered for twenty years why that lens was (1) not lacquered brass and (2) in nearly perfect condition.
Much appreciated,
Russ
For the benefit of readers who are not familiar with both lenses, here they are together. The enrgaving on my Eastman Kodak lens is oriented opposite from the original poster's lens, i.e., it reads...
I'm late to the party. There are older lenses in my collection but none as pristine as this Gardner & Harrison. Its basically mint. Great user.
A look at the NYC Directory for 1852/53 (page 233)...
Beautiful image, Ian Barber. Reminds me in a very positive way of A Horsely Hinton but none of his were this fine IMHO.

Informative and well done, thanks.
Edward Weston bought a Rapid Rectilinear in Mexico for 25 pesos (1924). He customarily stopped it all the way down to f/256 (f/64 today's scale). The lens is now at the George Eastman house. Its a...
Jim, they were acquired about 25 years apart. Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while.

Some beautiful images on this thread, folks, kudos ... but they're all SHARP!

As a sophomore, I was the High School year book photographer in the 1960s, Crown Graphic 4x5, grip-n-grin shots of the Science Club meeting to basketball games. Next year they switched to Yashica...
I had always wondered if that could happen ... not sure why it hasn't happened to me yet. Brilliant save with the tape. And brilliant new image. Just admired it on Flickr.

Steven, I examined the rear element and the side facing towards the film is almost flat... so it seems to be oriented correctly.
Russ
I wondered the same thing, Steven. The lens throws an image of about the proper focal length and it is quite sharp - as it is currently assembled, which seems to indicate a correctly oriented...

The smaller lens, #3636, has the matching number on the glass but on the inside of the rear element... couldn't find it then finally examined with a magnifier in raking sunlight and voila!...
Thanks, DS, that was very illuminating to see them all on one graph.

I shot through a 4x5 box about a decade ago and totally agree with INTERNEG that it seemed like regular film minus red sensitivity. It provided a little better tonal separation in tree leaves but I...
Ah, thank you for the clarification - you really had me puzzled! I have the large Graf as well but never seem to have gotten the hang of it. Any hints? I've read and re-read the original instructions...
That's hard for me to comprehend, Jim. As much as I like the Kodak 305mm, the 405mm has, in my eye, an even finer bokeh. I've used it as much on 5x7 as 8x10. If I could have only one soft focus lens,...
Thanks for the upload, John.

J S Bergheim was a major photographer of his era, in major exhibitions and much admired.
