Re: Pricing Aluminum Plates and Sheets

I've had an archival experiment going for about 8 years....I'll have to check the date. I made a plate on trophy plate, aluminum. I varnished it with traditional Sandarac. Then I put it on my...

Re: Where to Work - At Home, Kids, etc

What I've found is working in a darkbox, or small tent in the back of a truck is pretty hot and not conducive to making clean plates. At least for me, but I live in Arizona. Even in cool weather,...
  3. Re: Wet Plate Collodion questions answered here.

The issue of an image not appearing very much is not related to the formula. It's related to how old the formula is, as well as possibly how old it's component raw collodion. I've seen this many...
  4. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

The ones I've had are standard configuration. I just opened up a brass SEROCO (vesta store brand) and it's the thin lens at the rear. But you could reverse them, as with most petzvals that have...
  5. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

A Vesta is definately a Petzval. Just F5 vs F3.8, so it doesn't have much swirl anyway.

Re: Pricing Aluminum Plates and Sheets

I use old paper cutters. They have a long arm made of cast metal, and a wooden base. Look for them at thrift stores and used office supply stores.
  7. Re: Online Reference for overview of Darlot Lenses?

Brass lenses originally had lacquer. There should be no maintenance required for the finish, just dust them. Over time, many start to lose their varnish. It thins or chips. Often people will have...

Re: Help me choose a camera to hike 2000+ miles

I don't know about yall, but when I hike I often carry two cameras, one digital, one film. I took a Leica up into the Tetons, and my Fuji XE-1. Got lots of good shots from both, and they didn't...
  9. Re: Online Reference for overview of Darlot Lenses?

Not that I know of. There is a good book written by a nice lens scholar in France.

Re: Wet Plate Image Sharing, June 2020

If I could get a plate that nice with a box brownie, I'd pack up and never shoot another! Great shot!
  13. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

yes, 1/2 second is pretty common in bright sun. And if an image comes up fast and disappears during dev, esp if under 12 seconds....you blew it.

Re: E-Bay and PayPal: What should I know?

Oh buying is great. You buy an 88 year old lens, use it a while, then complain and send it back. Just like at Walmart. Except Walmart is a multi-billion dollar company, not Fred Gump selling at a...
  15. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

Another tip: beginners will usually overexpose. Especially if using a fast lens outdoors in sun, like a F3.8 Petzval, they cannot believe they will need to be at about 1-4 seconds. So their first...
  16. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

I have used a B&L Ic and IIb before, they work great. Actually, Tessars at F4.5 are really about as fast as a lot of Petzvals. So that is one lens I recommend. The Vesta is of course a fantastic...

    Re: Scanning Finished Tintype

Scan before varnishing. Use a higher DPI than you would think, then adjust contrast and color saturation down to what the plate really looks like. I use the lid down.

Re: E-Bay and PayPal: What should I know?

  20. Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

What type of camera and lens do I need for wetplate? That used to be the first question a newcomer asked. And interestingly, the answers have changed somewhat since 2006 when I started.

Re: E-Bay and PayPal: What should I know?

My fear of fraud on eBay has made it impossible to sell big ticket items that have to be shipped. Over $5000 sell price and you are in a very risky position. How do jewelers sell a $6,000 diamond...
