I've long used the Calumet Exposure Calculator. Its a very simple and straight forward way to get to the bellows factor. I think they still sell them. It's a two piece (target & scale) set. Put the...

I'm with Steve. Would you consider using a rollfilm camera in place of the large format?
You will come out ahead in terms of cost - there is a learning curve to this...
The price for a used 210 Sironar-S (the one with a red stripe) in a shop is around $800.
It is common that items offered for sale on this forum will go for somewhat less than a shop would charge...
A sekonic 508 zoom & later versions will give you both zoom spot down to 1 degree and ambient readings.
I'm with Robert on this. The B2 will support whatever camera you want, adjust in one plane at a time and never move.
A Hybrid Blackjacket is the best I have used. I'm on my second one, the first was for a 4X5 and and now I'm using one on a 5X8. I recommend them highly. A review is posted on the homepage.
I have no doubt that Ron's idea is correct. Photographers don't normally use spanners all that much, but if you are interested in build quality the spanner from SK Grimes is the best I have ever used.
Thanks for the michaelfoxphoto link, Gilbert.
For some reason, Imacon scanner software will sharpen the image until a setting of -120 is used. I read an article by John Paul Caponigro (online about 5 years ago) that gave this piece of...
Joshua Dunn I agree with Ron Marshall. I have two of these and while expensive they are outstanding. Sort cable releases can transfer shock and create vibration, thats why I use longer ones. The...
Have a look at the Blackjacket at quietworksdotcom. I'm using my second one at this point having changed to a larger camera.
Same lab as Frank develops, then I scan & print.
Chamonix, it's an excellent camera.
Another vote for the Blackjacket.
While living in NYC I used several different labs. At this point I send everything to Edgar Praus in Rochester. His service is exceeded only by his superlative work.

I think you nailed it, John. The 300 & another selection later is a logical way to go. I have 150, 180, 240, 300 and 480. The 240 and 300 are too close to be really useful IMO. When I have the chance...
For a first lens something normal or perhaps a bit wider is a good place to start. A 135 will give you a slightly wide view on a 4X5 without screaming WIDE ANGLE. It will give versatility using shoe...
You could call Bob Pearson at Holland & Holland in New York. Look at his work on the H&H website to see if his highly refined documentary style appeals to you. I find it quite elegant.
I think that the tripod head that you have is up to the job. Perhaps a golf umbrella to keep it out of the wind.
The Crane Museo Portfolio Rag is a matte paper that I use almost exclusively. It's natural white but looks good to me - I started off with Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl which has optical brighteners. I...
I use the Harrison tents. They are a bit more but worth the expense in the long run.
Good one, Bill.
I have a Rodenstock 180 APO Macro Sironar in like new condition for $950. If you're interested, please PM me.
Thanks,
John
I have to ship color film & Edgar Praus does an extremely good job. I just talked to him today about neg. sheet film and he will do same day turn around if the film gets to him in the AM. Nice.
Other:5X8
Contact Edgar Praus at WWWDOT4PHOTOLABDOTCOM. He has 5X8 hangers and does some of the best work available.
Another vote for Edgar Praus - you will be pleased.
Only one - 5X8 Chamonix
My understanding is that the Ronar lenses installed in shutters at the factory are multicoated. I had a 300mm that was really sharp, wish I still had it.
Access to Praus Lab in Rochester, NY for developing color sheet film.
In fact, the OP is cutting film down to 5X7, 8X10 film is commonly used for this. My experience is in cutting 8X10 down to 5X8. My response is appropriate to these small sizes. The "adjustable...
Michael,
The only problems that I have experienced happened when I first started this process. The moveable stop on the rototrim will allow you to place the film EXACTLY for cutting. Shortly after...
On the left sidebar they have a notice for an upcoming legal seminar. You might call and ask the good Pastor if they will cover copyright infringement.
I routinely cut film on a rototrim. No need to see the process, your monocle isn't really necessary.
The Sinar Zoom II holder is just under 1" thick (.983"). Since I have sold my 4X5 I no longer have a camera that will accept the Zoom II holder. If you have any interest please PM me.
John
Yes, it is discontinued. Very sharp, Large (112mm filter) and heavy (5lb.) Recommended if you shoot near your car or in a studio setting and use a camera that will accommodate it.
Jan,
Your image is elegant - the composition is superb. Thank you.
John
I'm with Eric, a standard Lee hood is my choice also. I've used some form of shade on
cameras for so long I don't really know what exactly the effect would be without one.
I'm not going out of my...
My dealings with DR5 have been very satisfactory. I think Glenn has a good idea, contact the owner and tell him about your problem.
The Jumbo Harrison tent is large enough to hold my 24" rototrim a box of 8X10 film and the 5X8 holders. No need to get a smaller rototrim just to fit in the tent, very neat.
