I think you could however having tested the above method just metering I feel whatever is behind the glass needs to be an even tone i.e pointing to the sky

Chamonix N2, Sironar N 210mm, copying Avendons American west backdrop, something went wrong with meter and developing but I got a print nontheless
It is not symmetrical and only fits on one way, you have to raise the ground glass holder a bit and slide it under the screws, hope this helps!

sometimes I need a starting point though, would be no good if I metered and the light I had was not powerful enough!

Nice, what is the limit on the shutter speed? Weight of the shutter blades? Could you go a bit faster say 1/60 with a light blades?
