I have had the opportunity to see some of Ansel's prints up-close. While they were very beautiful from an artistic standpoint , to my eye, they were not quite "perfect" technically. It was obvious...

I can not see the scans.
A good example to demonstrate a difference between a drum scanner tone reproduction capabilities and a flatbed one would be to scan the rebate area (borders with the holes)...

Yes , they can, just not as effectively as drum scanners do. And nobody will argue with the fact that the main advantage of drum scanners over CCD scanners in tone reproduction fidelity, which is due...

Re: Push/Pull processing if Scanning Negative

Part of a problem could be in poorly designed scanners software (or lack of understanding of its capabilities ) that outputs the data from scanned negatives in such a way that it creates the desire...

  9. Re: Is the obsession with analogue gearing an obstacle to art?

    There are rules in everything.
In some cases we don't know them (yet) or have been given a freedom to not follow some of them to a certain degree.
Even breaking the rules, if used repeatedly,...
  10. Re: Is the obsession with analogue gearing an obstacle to art?

Use an "artistic" imagination and there will be plenty of examples.
My comment serves as a challenge to a generalized statement.
  11. Re: Is the obsession with analogue gearing an obstacle to art?

I agree. In some other thread I wrote that I always use the same developer and other chemicals and their formulas\times for any B&W film that I happened to expose images on. They just "work" for me....

I wish there was a scientific explanation of what that "optimized for scanning" means . Otherwise consider that a marketing pitch.

  27. Re: after you remove the wet neg from scanner, what's your drying method?

Depends on what you mean by quality, Alan.
On a high end flatbed the difference is in noticeable smoothness in wet mounted scans vs dry. In theory (hard to prove), the tone reproduction should...
  28. Re: after you remove the wet neg from scanner, what's your drying method?

The reason why one would want to wipe out the residue left after mounting fluid...
