I have the same filter holder in my 45MCRX. I just cut the 6x6 Ilford filters to fit the rounded part. Most of the light from the condensers is filtered and there is no noticeable effect when...

I used a mouse pad cut to fit my tripod head. Contact cemented the fabric side to the metal on the head. The thin (1/8") backing makes a nice non slip surface and is easily replaceable.
I bought an older 45MCRX for $175 several years ago. The selling points were 3 negative carriers, 3 Rodenstock lenses and new bellows. Also included were a full set of Ilford VC filters and 2 boxes...
I use an older Beseler 45MCRX. Reconditioned with new bellows and a good lube job for all the moving parts. Standard condenser light source.
It could be a calcium buildup from using hard water. Soak it in CLR or any calcium removal product for a while then rinse thoroughly. It shouldn't harm the plastic. It's worth a try at least.
I recently bought a Crown Graphic in fair condition for very little money. As said above the standard lenses for it barely cover the negative with no movements. The lenses that I already have will...
Whatever type of camera you decide on you will be amazed at the difference between MF & 4x5. It's like the difference between 35mm & MF only on steroids! I kept my 35mm & MF for different shooting...
This happened years ago but was still a steal. I was helping my contractor friend clean out an old building which was slated for destruction. The bottom floor was a studio and the basement was a huge...
Heiland in Germany makes a very nice split grade VC head: http://www.heilandelectronic.de/.
It uses 100's of blue, green and red LED's and they have sizes for many enlargers. Looks pretty good but I...
My pet peeve is the loss of Plus-X in 4x5. I will ask them about it. Sure would like to have it back.
Keep the one in the front standard open and use the one on the lens. Or you could put the one on the lens to T and use the front standard shutter. Both methods will work fine. Just don't forget which...
It's too bad that that's about as far away from me as you can get in the lower 48 states.
I'm near San Diego. I would love to see Karsh's work in person.
New software and upgrades are a fact of life with computers as I'm sure you know.
However upgrading a site of this size is a major project and will cost a lot of money.
I've been on here for a few...
I use a Gralab 520 digital timer for dip and dunk in open tanks. It can be set to dim so the red digits are very faint. I've never had a problem with fogging film. It is about 6 feet away from the...
I hope the OP takes all of this into consideration. I sure have. Thanks to all for the great tips on selling!
You're right about not setting a reserve price. People see "reserve not met" and shy away from bidding. I just started selling a few months ago and don't set a reserve price either.
However if you...
The Majestic head really does need heavier legs. The one I have has the original 1" aluminum legs and weighs 12 pounds. Rock solid, though, with no vibration. I put a piece of 1/8" rubber on the...
This may be overkill for a 4x5 but an old Majestic tripod is built like a tank. Weighs 12 pounds and extends to 7.5 feet. Will hold the camera and photographer too! They come up cheap on craigslist...
Warren,
Too bad I didn't know about this till now. I could have sent a few boxes with the holders. Even though they weigh next to nothing the shipping would still be about 5 bucks minimum.
Best...
I agree. Benzotriazole or potassium bromide restrainers may make the developer too weak.
Even if there is fog it can be printed through if not too terrible. Try one sheet first and see how it looks....
Very good info so far. A couple of my old lenses use US stops. I don't have the chart at hand but not hard to figure out.
There are no guaranties but those lenses should fetch quite good prices on ebay from what I've seen. Even a low starting bid goes way high. I've been watching the prices for a few months and most go...
4x5 is much more practical for portraits unless you want to contact print from 8x10. The film selection is better for 4x5. Enlargers are also plentiful for very low prices for 4x5.
I made my own lens boards using basswood from the hobby shop. Easy to cut with an exacto knife. Can be glued together for the proper thickness and light baffle.
My old Majestic tripod goes to about 8' so I need a step ladder to work the camera. Very solid even at that extension for a 4x5.
I live in So. California and am still using up paper/foil packets of D-76 and Dektol from the 90's. Yes, it is hit or miss but the chemicals were free and a few tests is all it takes to make sure...
I almost cried when they scrapped the Robertson process camera where i retired from. I did get the lens and a bunch of other darkroom stuff though.:D
I mostly use a 210mm Rapid Rectilinear. If I need to go wider I use a 127mm Ektar.
Very nice looking camera. I wish you good luck with it. Post some pictures taken with it when you can.
Nikon, Schneider, Rodenstock, Fuji are good brand names. There are others as well. If you want a slightly wide angle lens then a 127mm or a 135mm would work. I have a 127mm on my Speed Graphic and...
Interesting idea. Seems it would keep a single sheet submerged quite nicely.
I buy all my film, paper and developing supplies from Freestyle. Great prices and next day delivery to San Diego.
Most modern/new lenses will fit. Older lens/shutters can be sticky and in need of servicing. A 150mm lens is considered normal. There are many brands to choose from. The camera takes a standard 4x4...
A little off the topic of printing but the bug lights don't work that well on keeping bugs away. When they burned out I just put regular CFL''s in and let the spiders take care of the bugs.;)
The 45M series are very sturdy and quite heavy. As mentioned check the motor function and condensers. A color version might just mean it has the filter drawer,
not a dichroic head. Please let us...
According to my uncle who was a Photographers Mate in WW2 the tropical developers were made for use in the Pacific theater. High temperatures during the island hopping that was prevalent, with the...
I live 35 miles East of San Diego in the foothills. It's averaging about 85 degrees F right now but in mid summer it stays in the high 90's/low 100's. I can process at 80 F now with D-76 1:1 so the...
The amount of chemicals is quite low and does not seep into the ground water with any concentration that would cause eutrophication or anoxia.
I have some of that in the fridge that expired in 1989. It is 120 not 4x5 and I used to shoot lots of weddings with it. I pull out a roll every now and then and shoot and process it. Still looks good...
I live on a 40 acre ranch with 6 wells. All of the water entering the house is triple filtered. I've never had any ill effects from either mixing chemicals or washing film and prints with this setup....
