    Re: Jesus at 100

A splendid portrait of a splendid subject. The humanity in the man's face makes the image quality worthwhile.

I don't know much about the characteristics of Petzval lenses. I take it that the...

Re: The hopeful future of film photography

"Naturally more people will go towards a digital direction, and many will combine the two -- but that only creates a bigger void of "traditional photography" for the "purists" to step in. I myself am...

    Re: Reading Van Gogh

I don't know what has happened to my post of a few minutes ago, but it has disappeared.

I just asked Hugo in which book he found the passage he quoted re: the elderly man befriended by Van Gogh.

    Re: Epson V700 vs 4990

Question from an ignoramus: Please bear with me.
What do "spi" and "ppi" stand for in scanner-speak? Could someone enlighten me?

[I believe "dpi" stands for "dots per inch"]

    Re: converting slides to B&W

    Magnus,
The thread “Re: Shadow detail & flatbeds” is a pretty current thread. In fact I wonder if Bruce Watson's post of 28th instant doesn't address your question head-on. I hadn't seen that post...

Re: The hopeful future of film photography

But are we considering artistic film photography as against mass digital photography and if so should we be? Artistic photographers are going to embrace digital as enthusiastically as anyone -...

    Re: Reading Van Gogh

Hugo: Please remember, I did not call Vincent Van Gogh a jerk - but by implication you did.

What I did was ask you what you meant by your assertion that "A jerk could be a true man as long as...

    Re: Reading Van Gogh

Bill &al: what is a PITA, please?

Hugo: What do you mean, "A jerk could be a true man as long as he has the courage to be true to himself."? A jerk is a jerk.

    Saulius: Thanks for the tip...

Magnus, you may have found the thread in this forum titled “Re: Shadow detail & flatbeds”. If not, what follows indicates some of the material in posts on it which I think might interest you.

  11. Re: Wishing to get a start in LF photography

My query was really meant for Scott Knowles and was only meant to refer to what Scott said about text.

I live in Australia [Victoria] and so apparently does Scott [WA]. However I am sure that...

    Re: converting slides to B&W

Marko, My comment was not very well worded. It is only the greater fineness of resolution of slides that I am not convinced of. I agree that negatives afford more flexibility than slides.

    The...

    Re: converting slides to B&W

Magnus: I was just wondering if the comparison was between results obtained by scanning, say, 35mm colour slides and 4"x5" b&w negatives. I think the latter could be expected to deliver better image...

"Negative film would still be more flexible, I think, except that slides tend to have finer resolution."

I have often heard this said but have yet to be convinced that it is so. I have recently...

    Re: converting slides to B&W

    Magnus,
Apologies in advance if my question is somewhat stupid but
    what is "tonality"?

Exposure of slides is more critical than exposure of negatives because there is no printing stage at which...
  17. Re: Wishing to get a start in LF photography

Regarding the different topic that Scott Knowles commented on viz: copyright I must say I was most astonished to read, "but text must be published to be copyrighted"!!

    Re: Rodenstock-Ysarex 150mm 4.5 ??

Ysarex lenses are generally Tessar-type lenses. The makers claimed an anjular coverage of 55 degrees in the sixties - I don't know if this is out of date.

Is this what you wanted to know?

  20. Re: How to Focusing Foreground Elements that are at the top and bottom of the Scene
