Welcome from another Montrealer. :)
A little bit heavier that you wish at 4.3 lbs, but I love my FLM CP34-L4 tripod for my 4x5 Linhof.
They have a slightly lighter model, at 3.1 lbs.
Exactly. Less impact in adding 10 or 20 seconds to a compensated time of 21'52 to doing it with one of 1'26".
Best practice for me has always been try it first with the manufacture's given times...
I have both Reciprocity and Exposure Assistant on my Android phone. Exposure compensation & times are similar when you compare them using the same film and metered time. Experimenting is essential,...
There's not much of a history of large format photography. The cameras themselves - monorail, field, press - haven't changed much in the last century, and the basic functions and techniques - rise,...
There was a March 2020 product update by Kodak that advised about Dektol being brown when mixed. Nothing about the powder itself.
"Dektol batches with date codes of August 2019 or later ...
First, I just shopped for a new one, and I can tell you there's no such thing as a "cheap" phone ;)
Second: no. A uninteresting photograph is an uninteresting photograph, no matter what it was...
Again, please check the website I linked in an earlier post. You'll find all the info you need, including tools.

I feel really bad for you. As someone else mentioned, we've all been there - I have a totally useless Canon QL that I was duped into buying (nothing as high as a Technika!) and that I intend to pick...
So many red lights here. First, that these serious flaws weren't disclosed before the sale is borderline criminal. But what I don't get, and makes me doubtful of the honesty of the seller, is how...
This is pretty amazing.
Totally agree. And I would say the same about Dawoud Bey.

My feelings exactly.
Thanks for correcting me Drew. Don't know why I wrote that, since I've been deep in Weston's life and work these days. Slip of the tongue, I mean pen, I mean keyboard, I guess.:D
Robert Louis Stevenson was in Monterey in 1879, staying with friends and spending a lot of time walking along the coast. Chances are he did go to Point Lobos.
Doesn't mean he wrote Treasure Island...
Fascinating. I actually don't mind the old-style editing and story telling, nor the general hagiographic tone - only the new-age music got on my nerves, as I had forgotten how much of an annoying fad...
In case of two similar lenses, go with filter size. If you already have lenses of same filter size as any of the two, or looking to get similar filter-sized lenses, go with that.
It'll avoid you...
This. Accessing the switch to open and close the shutter on the recess board is a PITA.
Plus, I had to buy a special - i.e., expensive - Linhof shutter release cable that would fit on the older...
As a P.S. to my previous post, not sure a recess board is needed. Mine came with the lens. You should do a search about that. Plenty of people with a lot more knowledge than me can answer. As I said,...
I never use the Wista because mine has a small problem in the back - and I do prefer the feel of the Technika -, but, as you can see, plenty of range with the movements (rise shown with the 90mm).

I have a Linhof Super Technika IV with a Schneider Super Angulon 90mm F/8 with a recessed board. Using such a huge 90mm on the Technika IV is a bit awkward but manageable. I don't use it that much,...
Greetings from up north.
And many don't. My point is don't make a rule out of it. It's a convention, not an obligation.
A catchlight is a convention and, as many conventions, it is neither necessary nor obligatory, especially in outdoor work (which is an essential aspect of the OP's question).
Look at Avedon's In...
I have the Rodenstock Aspheric 4x. Got it from eBay. Works wonderfully.

I second what Tin Can said: specify which Toyo models you're looking at and people will be able to answer very quickly.
Daniel, seems to me you're getting more than one red flag, and from quite a few experts.
After reading them, I would amend my earlier statement to say that you might have a lot of problems...
I know nothing about the advantages or disadvantages of battery operated shutters, but having dealt recently with insane import taxes after buying products from both Japan and the US, I totally...

The "Ansel Adams/zone system is a religion/cult" spiel is getting old and usually comes from people who never bothered to read his books.
Ansel Adams developed a system to help himself make the...
Just did a few pics of friends in a park this weekend with a 4x5. Overcast day. Was using Fomapan 100. Aperture was generally f/22, and had no problem with shutter speeds between 1/8s and 1/2s.
As...
Love it. Still hoping someone will one day revive an Ansel Adams' thread from 1957.
Indeed, one problem with pdmoylan's project - - will not be where to start but where to stop.
Thanks for the advice, Drew. And the personal recollections as well.
Green is an excellent idea. Adams does talk about how Edward Weston learned the hard way that a yellow-orange filter in the...
If you defined your plane of sharp focus at a high angle - from beneath the camera straight to the clouds - it's possible that you've excluded stuff that lies under the lower depth of field plane.
