Banks and restaurants etc are not exactly known for displaying serious art, often just what's decorish, big, and cheap enough to be expendable during the next remodel. Corporate sales tend to involve very low margins of profit.

To my knowledge, large(r) banks at least used to have some very nice fine art collections, usually displayed in their headquarters. Corporations, too. Most buy through art consultants, not directly.

Oh, I've known of investment collections, but that's not the kind of thing likely to show up on the walls of a local bank or hospital.

    What makes a desirable photograph?

I was just asked to shoot and print a series of portraits. Money never came up and it won't.

I have never sold a photograph and don't plan on changing in this life.

I will do my best, using 3 formats, 4X5, 11X14 film... and DSLR...obviously using 3 different lenses.

Each set will have different poses/clothing/hair/location.

No images will be posted here or anywhere online.

I am very excited and grateful for the work.

    Yup.

    The related truism:

    "What makes something art?"

Answer: someone willing to call it that.

There is no account for taste; therefore, myriad types of photos are sellable.....and Mark is correct. Had to stop at local drug store for comb and tooth brush (if you have to know :>) and while waiting in line I combed through several calendars.....and I was quickly surprised, that the color saturation can be pushed THAT FAR ? Aaaand I quickly wondered who would purchase such garbage ? I just might make a mini "project" and ask the cashiers if they sell any....after a week or two. Just curious. It will be v. convenient, since my groc store is on the same parking lot.

What we see as individuals varies greatly and I mean what we actually see.

My eyes have never been great and now fading into darkness.

Color is often a problem for the color blind.

It could be that extreme garish colors are artistically appreciated by many.

Some photographers do have superior eyesight.

    Some do not.

I photograph to get a better look and carry a flashlight everywhere. Constantly using a cell phone camera for a better look at whatever, even in stores.

In the end we all crawl...

as for those calendars, if they don't sell they will be land fill soon

LA joke, How do you get an actor off your porch?

    Pay him for the Pizza.

Photo joke, How do you make a Million Dollars from your photography?

    Start with Two Million.

    -------------------------------------

There is no formula for creating images that sell. No price/content/location magic answer.

Some years ago was at an art show, Art in the Park type. A young artist was so excited as he had just sold one of his framed images. He and the friend helping watched the new owner walking away - only to see him get to a trash can, punch the image out, tear it out and put it in the trash can and walk off with the frame.

Then, there are those who buy whatever it is you have so proudly made and displayed because it matches the color/pattern of their couch or carpet.

Low cost and throwaway work is there and will always be there as is High End work. No accounting for taste or reasons many buy art.

An absolutely wonderful image may never sell while the absolutely dreck by a "name" someone recognizes gets thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. Then, all the copycats come out of the woodwork.
