Welcome Kevin. Most of us just sell our spouse's car, something like that. You could check your kids piggy bank but I fear you'll find the president already got to that.

It isn't that expensive unless, you want it to be!

A cardboard box pinhole camera, some plastic trays, cheap film from china and a sheet of glass, dated paper and a string of red led Christmas lights for contact printing is a start.

I'd suggest building a ULF pinhole out of a good stout cardboard box. That way if the photography thing dosen't work out at least you'll have a place to sleep!

LF is expensive? It depends on what you compare it to. You can have a really excellent 4x5 set up with 3-4 modern lenses for less than what a Canon 1D Mark III would cost you without a lens.
LF ain't as fast, but it offers a lot of options and may give you more satisfaction.
