I too have to agree, the original has a certain something that you are prepared to look again. Cropped it is very good, but left as it was to me is more engaging.
I would have liked the original better with a little detail in the background. It would be nice to see a hint of book shelves or something to help place the subject in its environment.
Not sure exactly when this was shot but it was in a holder I was unsure about when developing the rest of my October portraits last night--does that count? 135mm Symmar on a Speed Graphic w/expired Ektapan.

Handheld with a Speed Graphic. Optar 135, Fuji FP-3000b. As this is the 3x4 stuff, framing is a bit of a challenge, but fun at the same time.

If I were to comment in any way, it would be about the lighting which is terrific overall, but doesn't quite catch the eyes which leaves them dead looking. Also, somewhat printing down both the hair light and the light on the back of the chair would draw much more attention to the face and hands.
