Experimenting with mounting options for wet plates, using found materials.

I mounted the plate I scanned a few pages back on an old piece of barnwood and then put bolts on it. The bolts have a nut on top and bottom, the top of which acts as a stand-off to mount a sheet of plexi. But I broke the plexi. Will try another sheet tomorrow and be more careful. The plexi will cover and protect the plate from accidental damage but not touch it. The top hanger part is a hinge I found in my spare parts bin and then it in conjunction with the bolts makes the whole thing sit out from the wall.

Probably would look better with a plate that is more focused on one subject and not a complex landscape but this is just an experiment to see how I like the look.

    Thanks Punker.

I started fiddling with another piece of acrylic tonight actually and busted that one. Finally pulled out my more complete drill set and carefully drilled out the acrylic holes bigger and bigger by 1/64" steps and it worked. Here's the finished product, showing the nut stand-off better:

Thanks Roger, glad to hear it. I am thinking about mounting more small prints like this. I have some plans for liquid emulsion on wood but also some small prints glued on wood perhaps. More folksy stuff seems to sell well, especially as it becomes more of a one-off, bespoke item.

Bryan - excellent plate and presentation.

Thank you for sharing your plate mounting ideas. Your ideas floated some new ideas for me... Tried gluing neodymium magnets to the plexiglas, using steel screws as standoffs, covering the exposed section of the screw with tubing. It was easy and looks clean and profession, but it is not as cool as yours. Good work.

Thanks Jay! I was thinking about magnets as well at one point. I would love to see more mounted / finished plates in this thread!

In sign hardware there are Stand Off Bolts if you want a more formal look . Drill plexi sandwiched between two boards to keep it from cracking. blue painter tape both sides helps too.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I've had very good success drilling acrylic with stepped (Unibit) drill bits. The cheap ones on eBay work just fine. About the worst thing you can use are standard twist bits designed for metal.
