Linhof Serial Numbers

Hi Bob,

80087 B - Appears to be a III with the black leather and 4 back locks but it has a B below the serial number and the corresponding 3 Zeiss lenses with it. I had thought the B versions with the Zeiss lenses showed up with the IV in 1956/57 but perhaps they appeared on the later III's at first. I know the IV had a larger front standard opening to accommodate the Biogon so if this camera is a III B type then apparently the larger front standard hole likely first appeared with the III B variant.

I'm exploring a Linhof I inherited that has a serial number of 30587 under the bellows (vs on the cold shoe). What model is this - it doesn't say anywhere. Perhaps the red spirit level is a clue? And what was the year of manufacture?

Thanks Bob, do you know if there was any overlap in the manufacture of the III & IV when they were both made at the same time. Or for that matter with all cameras did Linhof tend to continue producing a previous model for a year or so or did they stop making the previous model and only make the new model as soon as it came out?

As far as I know they sold old ones till they were out of stock

As far as I know they sold old ones till they were out of stock, even if they started a new model.
