Scanning 10x8 film with epson 1640

Has anyone tried scanning 10x8 film using the perfection 1640 scanner? I know that the film scan area is 4x9, so I was wondering if anyone had tried doing the scan in two parts and stiching them together with photoshop? Would placing the film emulsion side down lessen the potential problem with Newton's rings?

I'v though about but I don't want to crease the film (which may or may not happen, I just don't want ot take the chance.). I'm going to buy a microtek i900 to do my 8x10 scanning.
