Re: Reflection or light on an eye

Well, anime figures have many multiple catch lights in their eyes when excited!!! ;-) I had read that newspaper obit fotos often would retouch out catch lights in shots of the deceased to remove the "sparkle" of life...

An amazing use of catch lights and reflections in every pair of glasses was the movie "The Natural" with Robert Redford... An "old school" example of the use of expressive lighting!!! (For a baseball movie!?!!!) Beyond catch lights, interesting use was in the film "Blade Runner", where Rachel (the perfect cyborg) had deep glows in her eyes... (I figure they used a beam splitter "obie" in front of lens to bounce off the retinas for a glorified version of "redeye"... ;-)

Look at Avedon's In the American West. Shot outdoors, natural light. No catchlights in most of the portraits, and they are no less strong and expressive for it.

Many of the portraits in Avedon's book have catch lights (including the young woman on the right in your example), sometimes quite small, sometimes more than one or a strong horizontal reflection.

And many don't. My point is don't make a rule out of it. It's a convention, not an obligation.
