Hello from Marseille, south of France

    Hi guys,

First of all please excuse my french... My english isn't perfect and I may, no I will for sure, do some mistake while writing on this forum.
I'm 46, male. My forum name, esox, comes from esox lucius, which is the scientific name of the pike (the fish). I used to catch pikes, and eat them...
I studied music in National conservatory of music, mainly music writing and electoacoustic music (we call it "musique concrète" in french). I'm not music director like Ansel Adams was. I studied also science (geology) at university for 3 years.
My first experiments with photography was when I was about 13-14 yo, after I saw a print coming in the developer. My parents offered me a small laboratory for b&w. I had a Olympus OM10. Then I stopped photo when I went to university. I was doing music at that time, piano. I studied classical technic in order to play ... blues !

In the 90's I had the chance to meet and work as an assistant of a known american photographer living by my parents art gallery in France : Dennis Stock, Magnum agency. Dennis stock made lots of pictures of James Dean, they were friends and had the same age. He also did a lot of pictures of Hollywwod, Jazz, Hippies, Hells angels and Provence (France), etc. I worked with him, scanning his works, during about 3 years. He left France about 10 years ago and died about 2 years ago. At the end, he offered me one of his Olympus OM4, a lense and a tripod. I still use them.

I went back on photography seriously last summer with a DSLR... After some frustration, I went back ton my OM olympus toys and then bought an Hasselblad.

Here are some of my pictures : http://35mm-compact.com/forum/viewto...p?f=45&t=37901

But I managed to be frustrated with the Hasselblad lately... After taking advices I did the ultimate sin : I bought a Sinar F2 view camera... I'm still waiting for it, it will probably arrive next week. Why ? Because with a view camera I consider that one considers photography from roots with all the creative possibilities it means.

Last thing : I process my b&w and slide films, after I scan (Epson V700) and print (Epson R1900 with inkjetfly inks, quadtone rip for black only printing).

I hope my english is understandable.

Yes. welcome! I think you'll find a number of other members here with a musical background as well. It seems it has a connection to large format photography...

We look forward to seeing your images on this new adventure!

    Hello!
I know it's about you, but cannot help it...
I spent my childhood in Marseille, from 6 years old to 14. I lived in the XVeme (quartier nord), and with the kids on the other side of the wall, we used to throw stones at each others every weekend. I was pretty accurate, even now
And strangely enough, I am a geologist today.
If/when I come down there, I'll tell you and we can go throw stones at people again, like in the good old time

Ah yes. Relive old times and throw rocks at the neighborhood children. You should be ashamed of yourself!
If not, aim for the little ones. They are more difficult to hit and may even scream louder when you hit your target.

Do you know the lines from the Beggars' Opera:

who, like pikes lank with hunger
    bite their companions
    and prey on their friends.
