    Durst L1200 & 20x24 easels

I have an opportunity to pick up a Saunders 20x24 four blade center-masked easel. The seller is relatively close - within driving distance - so I don't need to incur postage for this heavy thing.

I've got a Durst L1200 on its original baseboard and will be printing 4x5s with a 135mm lens.

So - a question for all you L1200 owners...does anyone own this Saunders easel? If so, does its size (which works out to 26.5'' x 30.5'') get in the way of the column base when I want to print on 20x24?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

    Henry,

I can only partially answer your question, I have both items, but I have a low ceiling and loose a full 12 inches of column space in my current darkroom.

I think you may make it, if not, a Rodagon WA 120 should certainly do the trick.
I am sure others with full use of the vertical height will jump in soon.

Thanks, Allen - I was hoping you might chime in here since I'd seen your image on another post when I was poking around for answers.

I'll have a look at using a 120. The thing with the Saunders easel is that there's a groove at the top of the easel for 20x24 paper (and other groves for other paper sizes, I believe). I'm just not sure that I'll be able to use the groove given the overall size if the easel and where the column of L1200 is placed.

    Henry,

Drop Blairware a PM, he has the same enlarger. He is a really great guy, I am pretty sure he can add to this.

I am limited to 16x20 currently, I am looking forward to high ceilings in my next darkroom!

I tried your scenario, and doing 20x24s is no problem with a Durst 1200 and a 135mm lens—the top of the enlarger carriage was about 12 inches from the top of the column. The bigger issue is that the distance from the column to the center of the baseboard is not really large enough to center the easel. If I was gong to do 20x24 inch prints I think I would wall mount the enlarger leaving a space under it to be able to move the easel back to center the image. I was used a Saunders 20x24 Universal 4-blade easel.

I agree with Richard. I had my Durst set up with a drop base...this solved the issue and 20x24 prints were nor problem.I often did 2-x30 from 6x9 and it was a dream.
