M Synch On Wollensac Shutter, Red Or Black

My speed graphic camera has an optar lens in a Wollensak shutter. I would like to start shooting with flash bulbs. The shutter has a position for "M" synch in red, and one in black. What's the difference between these two? Also, when I fire the shutter in the black "m" synch mode, I only need to cock the lens once. When I fire the shutter in the red "M" synch mode, I have to cock the shutter, fire the shutter, cock once again to get the shutter to open and close. What do you think of this?

    hi david

    sometimes there are 3 positions, m x and v
m is for bulbs ( magnesium ) x is for strobe ( xenon ) and is for self portrait .
i am not sure why your shutter is acting the way it is ... have you had it CLA'd lately?
maybe it is acting a little wonky because it needs to be cleaned ...
usually you just need to cock and fire them once for the shutter to go
and the flash to .. flash.

if you need your shutter worked on, post your location, maybe somene near you can
    suggest someone local ...

    good luck !

The black M is for the higher shutter speeds, and the red black is for the slower shutter speeds. Or vice-versa... I don't have a shutter in front of me to refresh my feeble memory. Look at the shutter speed numbers, they are intwo colors to corespond with the two M settings. To be honest, I don't know what the delay difference is between red and black M, though.

Re: having to cock the shutter twice. That's not the way it supposed to work. Something is likely wrong with your shutter... wonky.

    Found this in Graflex.org
Black M=M type flash bulbs sync @ shutter speeds marked in black.
Red M=M type flash bulbs sync @ shutter speed marked in Red
    Are your shutter speeds coloured?
    This from Photonet
    F-X = 0 millisecond delay.
    M Red = 8-12 millisecond delay.
M Black or White = 16-20 millisecond delay
    From Butkis
Flash with Synchronized GRAPHEX: Connect the cord from contact posts on the shutter to the SHUTTER (series) Outlet of battery case. Move synchronizer control lever to position recommended by the lamp manufacturer's flash tables before cocking shutter. Double "M" setting: for faster (black) speeds, use black "M" position, for slower (red) speeds, use corresponding red "M". For gas-filled type "F" lamps or high speed electronic flash not operated by a relay, use "X-F" setting. Use red shutter speeds with SM and SF lamps. Place in the "OFF position if flash is not being used or shutter is being tripped with a solnoid. Trip shutter by the Body Release. Do not attempt to use the button on the battery case.

... or what I meant to say:

The black M is for the higher shutter speeds, and the red M is for the slower shutter speeds.
