    Re: autumn

I like it a lot but I'm not sure why!

As a side issue, is the American use of the word autumn regional? Obviously we use it here in the UK and are use to the American use of fall for the season so it always seems strange to read in in a post from an (assumed) American.

    Steve.
Americans are lazy. We frequently use contractions where possible. Why not use "fall"? It isn't much shorter than Autumn, but by shaving off the time to pronounce or type the longer word, it gets us back to where we really need to be: updating our status on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever waste of time we happen to be indulging this week.
Strangely, I find myself using "Autumn" more this year than in years past. Living in the south, I find "fall" to be more common. I hear both from those up north, but never thought of a regional connection until you asked.

I'm in the northeastern US and we use "fall" and "autumn" pretty interchangeably around here.

    Re: autumn

I like autumn better as it encompasses the entire season. Fall is for falling leaves and we don't have much of that in my neck of the woods,

I think that in Canada, we use fall more often. After all, you can't really say spring forward and autumn back...

    Re: autumn

OK, I started this mess, so here are my thoughts. I ALWAYS (except in this one case!) refer to the season as fall. I just thought that people might be thinking "fall of what?" when they saw the thread title, so I wrote autumn.

    Same in the southeast.

I think "fall" is more casual and "autumn" is, well, usually used somewhat less casually.
