Intriguing. The wide angle look really centers attention.

I went back to the Ebey's Landing steps on an overcast morning for another try with the pinhole camera. This one is a 16 minute exposure on preflashed Harman paper.

Do you have any idea how long the pre flash lasts?

Has anyone experimented doing preflashes using a Whitebalance lenscap?

    This kind:

They should provide a uniform diffused exposure, that way one could do a preflash in the field before taking the main picture.

Looks like a good idea. I have read suggestions of carrying a piece of plain matte board with you, like an 8X10" section, and hold it a few inches in front of the lens to preflash. Another possible option that I have not tried - if your lens has a small enough diameter, slip a white Styrofoam cup over it for preflashing.

That's more or less what I do. I have tracing paper tapped to the glass of a cheap protective filter. It works well.

Do you have any rule of thumb for in camera preflash?

My guess would be to start with some rule like 'preflash with diffuser for 1/3rd of the metered exposure' obviously one would have to bench that against the actual light transmittance of the filter etc.

Also contributing to the contrast of the paper neg is developer and developer dilution, age (fog) of paper, whether or not the taking lens is coated. I recently read that a good starting point for paper neg in camera flashing is 1 2/3rd stop under shooting exposure. So, I guess if the exposure time for proper exposure is 10 seconds, pre-flash would be for about 3 seconds...? Or if exposure aperture is f/11, close down 1 2/3rd stops, to almost f/22. I have to do some experimenting myself.

Yes I did. Nice uniform preflash. Also can be used in Zone system film testing.
