Wow, after seeing this thread I think I'll start my LF experiments on paper!

An experiment with pre-flashing the paper by making an exposure (1/4 the 'taking' exposure) with a piece of plain paper in front of the lens.

Chamonix 10x8, Symmar-S 360/6.8, Kenthene RC glossy Gr2, Ilford MG developer, V850 scans:

These were actually the 5th and 6th exposures I took. The first four were attempts at guessing the exposure, using two CFT lights and one strobe. I ended up taking these two with eight exposures of one second, and during each one second exposure the flash fired twice! Obviously my guess at rating this paper at ISO12 was, umm, inaccurate, as my flash meter had indicated that a single one second exposure would do it.

It looks like that on the negative as far as I can tell with a loupe, so write this lens off as having horrible OOF areas...

Multiple exposures with multiple flashes and each time you probably had to cock the shutter: maybe the edges are due to camera movement or the foliage wilting under the lights? Interesting result, anyway.

G'day Chris, as John writes you may well have induced camera movement. Perhaps it would have been better to reduce the ambient light and use an open shutter whilst firing the flash manually.

I've done similar and even with studio monoblocs paper neg requires something like 6-12 full flashes.

Can't believe I haven't read this thread or tried this yet. But I read it, and loaded up a couple sheets of old Bergger paper tonight. Had to trim the bottom 1/8 inch or so to get it in my 8x10 holders. Hope I didn't break the hinge seal trying to force it before I figured that out...

Hello Ray, nice to see you here. Is that one of the single "magnifying glass" lenses?

I am still using my MDF single-channel paper holders modeled after the ones you made.

G'day Ned, great to hear that I was of some help.

    Yep, single magnifying glass lens.

I'm about to test a composite made up of two magnifying glasses. I suspect image quality will still be "poor" but I wanted a reasonably wide for my 5x8 camera. A 305mm and a 240mm should give me 135mm.
