Thank you Philip...I made that image back in the 1990's. Would love to get back there again, and only hope that I'd have the same access as I had back then.
Adams Paper Company, Wells River, Vermont. 2014.

In the late 1890's this company was one of two commercial paper manufacturers that specialized in the newly invented and VERY popular rolled toilet paper. The company flourished until the 1950's, when more modern manufacturing techniques were underpricing them out of business. They managed to struggle along, making ends meet until 1971. That was the year the EPA stepped in and measured the effluent that they were dumping into the Wells River...which flowed directly to the Connecticut River just a few miles away. The toxic waste was miles beyond what was considered acceptable, including PCB, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals and dioxin. To top it off, they were a petri dish of virulent organisms. Upon being ordered to clean it up or face hefty fines, the parent corporation, the Robertson Paper Company, of Bellows Falls, Vermont, spun the Vermont company off and had it file for bankruptcy.
Thanks for the history Michael. I drive by there all the time.
