Wonderful photograph, especially now that we know who is in the doorway.
Do you remember where in New Mexico this was taken.
Hi Alan, good to hear from you.

Yes, it was in the abandoned coal mining town of Madrid. I read recently that a couple of hundred people live there now, and have fixed up some of the buildings. There is a photo of the houses on my wbsite, Portfolio #1.

    Best,
    Merg

    Re: Old Things,Farms,Barns,Buildings, Plus

In the mid 1990s I began shooting the many abandoned farm houses and town buildings scattered throughout the Northern Plains. I started with a Bronica ETRSi and quickly moved to a Cambo 4x5 monorail. A couple of years later I bought a Shen Hao, and later a Chamonix 045n. In the early 2000's I switched to shooting a lot of railroad stuff. This year I've sort of gone back to my roots. I've been prowling the section roads of the Dakotas and checking out long abandoned buildings, and taking shots with the Chamonix. My most used lenses are a c.1920 Dagor 4 in., c.1922 Heliar 150mm, and c.1912 dagor 240mm (in very early Compound!) I sometimes will use a pre-Civil War (1850s) Petzval. My film of choice is FP4+. Anyway, I'm having fun! I like poking around in these slowly decaying structures--never know what I'm going to find. I just have to be careful I don't fall through the floor. Some recent shots:

    Hi Merg

Your Madrid shot reminded me of one that Edward W took of Charis

............and yes I visited said town on 'The Turqouise Trail' around 20 years ago, it was pretty well up and running then as somewhere a little quirky, must re-visit, NM is a terrific state

    best regards

    Andrew

Madrid is a thriving small art/tourist community. A movie was filmed there about 10 years ago and some of the prop buildings remained. The buildings were converted to galleries and restaurants.
It has changed a lot from your 1968 photo.
