Austin you find a lot of iron, around here they recycled most ot it

I went looking for deep woods iron I saw 50 years ago and they got it all out, at that time big trees were growing through 1920's cars, that had been pushed downhill towards the Mississippi, but never got close to the floodplain

I do know of 2 barges...

Big trees growing through 1920's cars is something I'd seek out myself. As far as my old iron, I guess time moves slowly out here in the west, at least away from the cities. I'm told that the combine above is probably from the 40's-50's.

Heritage House, one of the earliest homesteads in Pflugerville, TX and now maintained by the Pflugerville library.

These are straight scans from 8x10 work prints on RC glossy. I've revised my processing a bit, recalibrating my development times and finding new "proper proof" times. A side benefit is that when I've metered correctly, I can make straight work prints from the negatives at a standardized 9 seconds, f16, G2 on my ZoneVI VC head, with no dodging, burning, etc. That means I can "gang process" (expose multiple negatives and process multiple sheets together in the developing tray) to get a set of 8x10s quickly, to see what the images look like. The ones I like I can then print properly on FB with whatever local burning and dodging is appropriate.

Hi, Peter. Interesting to see the two crops. It's not just that the formal composition changes; each has its merit. But they say different things. I actually prefer the more generous crop with the wider format; it seems to offer a little more to study in the foreground.

I think the challenge here is the split foreground with the channel into the background. While the formal elements balance, the lack of points of interest in the middle and background, except for the tower, hamper, in my view, the unity of the composition. I find myself looking from place to place in search. Of course, this is from a screen view of a work print. A good contact print, or modest enlargement, on FB could yield those rich, modulating tones -- for example, in the hose siding -- that sometimes make 8x10 such a tonal standout.

In printing, I think I would look towards a print that maintains the sense of light but places the lower values further down. You have plenty of exposure and detail there to play with.
