    Enlarger Reference Book or Site

    Hello:

I'm trying to find a book or web site that provides detailed information regarding how to operate an enlarger (if you've read or perused the Simmons book on view camera basics, then you have an idea what I'm talking about). I don't expect to find a book solely on the enlarger; but perhaps some book has a good chapter. From my web perusal, I haven't found (not to say it doesn't exist, but I haven't found it) a sort of "novice's guide to using an enlarger".

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    What kind of enlarger?

    Condensor?
    Condensor diffusion?
    Cold light?
    Dichoric color head?
    Point light source?
    Variable contrast?

    Auto focus?
    Manual focus?

The instruction book from any enlarger that you want to buy will take you through the operation and features.

    Hello Bob:

Your questions expose the depths of my ignorance

Other than thinking that I'd want something to work with B&W and color images, the varieties you mention are lost on me (but I can now use those terms to investigate further). Thanks

The bible is (was) "Lootens on Enlarging." It was re-written by Lester Bogen (of tripod fame) and should be around in used form.

Ralph Lambert's book (Way Beyond Monochrome) covers most details of light sources, alignment, focusing, aperture, lenses etc. I'd recommend that.

Some of the info in Ralph's book is available on the internet, only spread out over thousands of his posts. Best to buy the book.
