The print is just regular silver gelatin (Ilford Art 300) and I've painted the developer on instead of putting the paper in a full tray.

Is it: 1) Expose negative on paper with enlarger -> 2) Paint the area with developer via brush -> 3) Let it work for usual developing time and then fix it?
Thanks all!That's it exactly! Though it's closer to brush some on, watch it develop, brush more on as needed and so on until you're satisfied.
You'll want to wipe most of the developer off the brush as with a fully saturated one there's too much liquid and it runs and then looks too even.
