    Yup!

I normally use lens hoods to shield the lens from stray rays, but am yet to afford a compendium.

I use an old straw Stetson or my felt one to protect the top of my head so it is always handy. Whenever I am shooting into the light I will also use the Stetson to shade the lens in addition to the hoods.

Dark slide, hands, etc. If you want cheap lens shades, save the threaded ring from those useless rubber hoods, junk filters and such. Glue 'em to the bottom of a styrofoam or paper cup and spray it black. You can make all kinds, from long to wide angle, depending on the size of the cup. It helps greatly if you cut a hole for the lens to look through, too.

What!?!?! I thought men could only do large format photography if they wore a hat. It is some kind of requirement or maybe a law of nature.
Nothing beats a great piece of glass!

There are LOTS of videos of St. Ansel using his Stetson.

Yeah, I know. I've only known him to be wrong (IMHO) about two things. One, his explanation of why the ground glass on some LF cameras has the corners cut out. And the other his suggestion that a hat, dark slide, etc. be used.

I'm not sure how that would work but maybe so. I kind of like keeping my hats free of holes and using a compendium shade to deal with extraneous light. But there certainly were many times when I didn't feel like going to the trouble of attaching the compendium shade and used my hand or a dark slide instead.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. When my hat has a hole it's time to get a new one.

What was his explanation? I always thought it was to let the air in and out as the camera is focused. And it comes in handy for checking coverage.
Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Art is everything else we do.

On more than one occasion I've looked at flare on a negative and wished I'd used a hat....
