"Universal objective n°4
The objective, mounted as it is, is ready to take portraits.

According to the dimensions one desires to obtain, use the lenses screwed on the A-side : the 60.c lens takes the bigger picture, or if one is far it makes the objects bigger, which makes it unnecessary to come closer to a..."
OK, no new information - but a nice extra for the buyer! I have a more extensive description of the use of the original "Universal" from around 1890, which I think I have posted at some stage.
To-day, an unusual late Ross petzval with a serial number of 67581. This is after the period when Ross's lenses were engraved "CDV" or "Cabinet" and no information was given about it's dimensions. Just "Portrait" and "3A". Lens VM is not very informative about these later versions, except to say that they had rear lens diffusion. A 3A in Ross's use, usually means a 4" wide, F3.5 and 16" efl. It was fitted an iris and had a very long hood for that era.
Sold for £340 at Toovey's UK (Saleroom.com).
To avoid discussion about % and exchange rates, I make this 601 usd!
There were plenty of other useful LF items included in this lot. I was rejected as a bidder due to bidding site/auctioneer mess-up (again!).
