It's not an authentic reproduction unless it has the soft focus adjustment already frozen in place...

Anyway, here is a "Virgin" entry!

Are you calling it "virgin" because it was never used? Or because no one ever bought any of them and they remained immaculate? I've thought a more appropriate name would have been "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Lens" but it was too long to engrave.

"Virgin" because this particular lens has never been used - according to the seller. But also because this is the first time this retro design has appeared in this thread.

    Boyer Opale 260mm f4.5 + Gitzo shutter US$880 (BIN 223619657158)
Rodenstock 250mm Imagon for $180 on the local classified (nice linhof box set with color filters)
I have now to explain to my wife what an Opale Boyer is and why I broke the piggy bank....

The Boyer Opale is an interesting lens, one of the few to use chromatic aberration rather than spherical aberration to achieve its softness. I've been told it is a Tessar with the glass types in the achromatic doublet reversed.

It is an intriguing lens indeed. This auction was for an Opale/Saphir lens. You are right about the Opale being a modified tessar. This lens can be set as a tessar (Saphir) or as an anachomatized tessar (Opale) just by changing the back element. This lens comes with both Opale and Saphir back elements.
I have no idea how the softness will looks like as I could not find any picture made with this lens online....

I think if you varied the spacing between the front elements (as Wollensak did with their f/4.5 Tessar), and used it with the anachromatic rear element, you could open up a tear in the space-time continuum...

Thank you Emil. This is a very nice picture indeed. The softness is very light but wonderful!
By the way, did you hand painted the red pattern on the print?
