    Mat size - 5x7 print

    Hi gang,

Normally, I would mount a 5x7 print on an 11x14 mat. For some reason, I put a 5x7 down on the back of an 8x10 print and it looks pretty good. It seems nice an cozy for hand holding or hanging on the wall in small spaces.

Just curious, do any of you mount 5x7s on an 8x10 board?

    Hi David,

I hang my 5x7 prints in 8x10 Nielson frames.

B&H sells the Savage Premium White Core Mat- Acid Free.

These are 5x7 pre-cut mats that fit the 8x10 frame.

    I use #6002328- Polar White.

I've done it. It is indeed nice for displaying in small spaces or non-wall locations like atop the fireplace mantel.

I can use up some of the mat board cutouts from larger jobs and if it's my own house, choose a colorful mat board that works with the image and where I want to put it.

Re: Mat size - 5x7 print

I’ve found 5x7 on 8x10 an agreeable, flexible relationship to work with.

Many will run the two shorter (and two longer) sides along each other and center the photo. That leaves equal margins all around – 1.5 inches, which can be pleasing to me for these dimensions, though I do sometimes desire the tension produced by unequal margins. It’s quite rare, but I’ve even placed the photo’s longer side along the backing mat’s shorter side. In either case, I might raise the print, or lower it – a little, or a lot. It all depends, of course, on my composition, and whether its orientation is vertical or horizontal. (And what mood I’m in.) If you’re over-matting a floating mount, deciding on the space between the print’s edge and the over-mat’s window edge is yet another balancing act, since you’re affecting how wide or narrow the outer margins will appear. Lots of fun possibilities with 5x7 on 8x10.

Thanks everyone. I saw your responses but did not have time to post.

I tried a few 5x7 contacts on 8x10 mats and I like them very much. I appreciate your input.
