Having had marginal success using my HP combiplan and tray processing of 5x4 film I am now going to try rotary processing in my Jobo processor. I am going to be lazy and ask about agitation. Is two direction agitation better than single direction agitation.

My guess is that it must be as you are less lightly to experience bromide drag marks which can be caused through regular flow pattens. However, as a confirmed tray processor I cannot be sure.
Although for many years bi-directional agitation was touted as the only way to get smooth negatives, many users report that single direction works well. I have mine reverse, but am considering single direction for the expert drums because they are a very heavy load on the motor.
A Jobo tech. told me that reversing direction every 2.5 turns was optimal for the Expert Drums.

I would say:
ALWAYS reverse direction! I have been using it for over twenty years (E-6, C-41, B&W) with sucess. I see no reason to change it. As I said on a former post, I remember reading in some Jobo literature, back in Germany many years ago, that it was a MUST if you wanted to have consistent results...
I have always followed that rule, with all kinds of drums, including various Expert drums for sheet film processing.

I use the 3010 and 3005 drums on a Beseler base. I do not reverse them. So far, no problems.
