Re: Lerebours Serial Number - Rice Writing

Just a small addition about lens hood cup apertures! Everything eventually appears on ebay ( and perhaps our own FS section too!).
I discovered this on French ebay. It is a complete cup insert for either Lerebours et Secretan or Hermagis. I think it is quite likely that these two had their brass made in the same workshop. I read the external diameter as 91mm - which matches a Hermagis I have. If I find that it doesn't fit, it will be available, with no mark-up, to someone else. Obviously, having right size, no WHS or cup insert at present, will help!

Later! I have evoked the last sentences!

Added another 3 Lerebours et Secretan lenses to the list of existing lenses (#63) today. We are up to about 85 known lenses now - there must be some more out there? We have less than 1% of the total production!

I am so pleased to have found this thread! I have just purchased #8473 and was looking for info on this lens when I came across this thread. It came with cup stop and the lacquered brass lens cap. Thank you all for your contributions to this thread and the generous sharing of information. Does anyone know the whereabouts of #8454?

I found a rather attractive “wood and brass” photo of 5334 on the net. This is an unusually complete version (with 3 washer stops) and without Waterhouse slot adaption. Have added the details to post #63 page 7!

Later: will add the JFS import of 6034 (post #136) now to the page 7 list!

A rather small J.F.Shew Serial 6034 petzval design with rice writing-serial number on front doublet and on both rear elements. focal length 90mm speed f3 approx.

It's a wonderful threat! This serial numbers lists should be tried with other large manufacturers, at least those with less information about numbers & dates of production.

Just today my Lerebours et Secretan lens has arrived. It's the #3830! Although I have no precise mesuring now, it looks like a 230mm to me, with what I think is a f4 aperture. No Waterhouse cut, but hood cup (without diaphagms other than the basic cup, but it's the first one I see so I'm not sure how this works). There's a rice writing, matching serial in the back element.

I don't know how to update the list.

Re: Lerebours Serial Number - Rice Writing

It’s posting # 63. As I posted the skeleton serial list, I’m the person has to do the up dates. I usually don’t bother to mention the individual additions to keep the thread concise. I add ebay lenses when they are listed - without drawing attention to them. Will do the update when you confirm lens diameter.
I may have posted these before but these are the 2 tables covering Petzvals to 1853 and then up to 1865.
I venture to guess your lens diameter is 81mm!
Will post some photos of washers and cup assembly- you are only missing the plain washers.

I couldn’t locate that Lerebours, so here is a Hermagis which is almost identical. It is no surprise that the flat washers get lost. They must have exactly the same diameter as the narrow bottom of the “cup” and held in place by the pressure ring. Obviously the washers with smaller apertures than the one being used have to be stored somewhere.

Re: Lerebours Serial Number - Rice Writing

sadly, my lenses are smaller, now I've found my caliper, and it's exactly at 51mm in diameter (front), so probable it does not cover a 13x18; I asume the focal leght is from half-way between each group of lenses to the focal plane; I've checked again and it's about 230mm to me. It's off the scale in the list you attached, but that says lenses from 1855 to 1865 and I asume mine is older, right?

D'Agostini shows a petzval with that same f4.5 in p. 234, and another at 238 (although both larger).

I think I have almost the same lens (in diameters and other mesurements) than the ones discussed in postings #111 & #114
